W&J Celebrates Homecoming & Reunion Weekend 2012

On October 19-20, 2012, alumni and friends joined in celebration at Washington & Jefferson College, reuniting with friends and family and reminiscing wonderful memories during Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.

The weekend began with a taste of tradition, featuring the Veterans Memorial Service, reunion receptions and Homecoming Dinner.

During Friday evening, the Reunion Class Cup was awarded to the class of 1972 for their outstanding 44 percent participation in giving. Since the Class Cup Competition was reintroduced in 2006, the class of 1972 is the first class to win the Cup two consecutive years.

Three awards were presented to notable alumni for their accomplishments and involvement with W&J. Larry Sumney '62, president and chief executive officer of the Semiconductor Research Corporation, a leading technology research consortium, received the Alumni Award for Achievement. The 2012 Distinguished Service Award was presented to McClellan “Guy” DuBois '70, a member of the W&J Board of Trustees, who has volunteered his time, talents and treasures to W&J for more than 30 years. The 2012 Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient is Amanda Boehm, Ph.D. '02, senior editor at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

On Saturday, alumni gathered for the Dieter-Porter Medical Lecture and W. Edward Sell ’45 Legal Lecture featuring “Welcome to the New Frontier: Quality Driven Healthcare” and “Money, Law and Elections,” respectively. The legal lecture spotlighted two award recipients: General Andrew Farley, Esq. ’56 (posthumously), and Robert Stevenson, Esq. ’64.

As for new additions to the 2012 Homecoming weekend, the Information Technology Leadership (ITL) Breakfast celebrated the ITL department’s 10th anniversary and new program title, Computing Information Sciences. Also, the W&J Authors Present: Poetry and Prose spotlighted the literary accomplishments of W&J alumni and faculty.

Family favorites like the Tailgate Lunch under the tent brought together many friends and families. The reunions gathered in celebration as well. Notably, the 1992 Stagg Bowl Reunion recognized the accomplishments of W&J’s football program. After their recognition at the beginning of the Homecoming game against St. Vincent, the Presidents were victorious with a final score of 40-14.

After the exciting victory for the Presidents, alumni gathered at the all-time favorite fifth quarter, enjoying music, food, and friends.
